Traffic Speed Enforcement
The Summit County Sheriff Department has recently placed a trailered electronic billboard at the west entrance to Summit Park. Its purpose is to remind resident drivers to maintain a safe speed and watch for pedestrians and bicyclist. It also advices visitors they are entering a residential community. Sheriff deputies will have an enhanced presence in our neighborhood during strategic times and, although this program was intended to help modify risky driving habits, issuing speeding citations will be at the discretion of the Deputy. Our neighborhood has raised serious concerns regarding pedestrian and traffic safety. This collaborative effort between Summit Park and the Sheriff Department is one of several measures that will confront and hopefully elevate the safety of our children and residents. You can review the entire list of traffic calming recommendations on in the previous blog.

I reviewed the traffic calming proposals, pictures, etc. and this current post. With the increased Sheriff presence mentioned above, would it be possible for them to enforce the parking laws as well? The corner of Lower Evergreen and Parkview, where the bus stop is located, seems to be a very problematic location. The persons and business trailer located there have been asked several times to not park in the roadway, block the fire hydrant (which is happening right now…and for last several weeks), and make it difficult for vehicles to see oncoming traffic. The road is already narrow in this location, and it is a matter of time before a child is injured. Thanks!

Have you personally approached the owner of the trailer and politely discussed the difficulty in seeing oncoming traffic, the problematic narrow road and of course the fire hydrant issues? If so, what has his/her reaction been? Not trying to be a smartass, I just want to know if the person has been properly approached and what their response was. Also, I’m not too familiar with that part of SP, but wasn’t the road recently redone? If so, why is it so narrow? Is this something that we may want to raise as a concern with the County?

Actually yes. It was discussed with them at the beginning of the snow season when they had 2 cars parked in the same location….and they moved them. Not sure why they felt there was an exemption for the trailer?? And yes, that section of the road was redone, however, the house they live in, and the driveway across the street with a sharp incline, only allowed the county to do so much. The house with the trailer actually has an overhang on their garage that is less than 3 feet from the roadway…which I’
m okay with as the house was here long before the huge increase in residents and the need for road repair. The problem is, it is being used as a rental and there are only 2 designated spots, yet at least 4 cars and a trailer. Take a drive (or a walk) and have a look…you will immediately see the issue…and if you do it at school bus time, you will be alarmed!

Have them enforce parking problems while they are here. Fire hydrant and street parking on corner of Lower Evergreen and Parkview…but stop and narrow roadway already…very dangerous

You are all right on target with your comments and concerns. We should all get involved and help with these efforts. Good job Summit Park residents and Summit County Sherriff.
